Packing is the most time-consuming stage of moving house, but if planned well, it will be a far more bearable and stress-free exercise.
While moving, you are often caught up in all the chaos, so it is important to write everything down and make lists to which to refer.

Remember that packing preparation is essential, and it is advisable not to leave everything to the last day to ensure peace of mind that all your belongings arrive in one piece.
To prepare for packing, make sure you have all the necessary tools, including:
- Boxes
- Marker pens
- Bubble wrap
- Newspaper
- Packing tape
- Scissors
As you start packing, number each box with a marker and keep a list of all the items that correspond with that number. This way, if any items are missing or boxes are misplaced, they can be easily traced. Start packing room by room, and use your marker pen to clearly label each box according to the room that they have been packed in.
Start to pack the unnecessary items ahead of time. Items which you know for certain you will not need during the 30-day countdown to moving can be packed away, as this will save you a lot of time on moving day. Only keep out the bare essentials, packing these the day before the move.
Have a variety of different sized boxes on hand. Large boxes are useful for carrying many lightweight objects such as Tupperware and linen, and smaller boxes are best suited to heavier or more delicate objects such as books and glassware. When packing these fragile contents, remember to protect them with bubble wrap or newspaper.
Never over pack your boxes; rather pack too few items into a box than too many. The reason for this is to prevent items in your box being squashed or the box giving way and breaking open.
It is a good idea to have a “valuables” box and a “moving day” box. The “valuables” box can be used to pack valuable items such as family heirlooms, jewellery and official documents including birth certificates, passports and identity documents. This box should be kept with you at all times. Your “moving day” box should include toiletries and any other essentials you will most certainly need within the last 24-hour countdown to moving or during moving day. Some essentials that you may find useful to include in this box aretoilet paper, towels, wet wipes, black bags, bottled water, headache tablets, a dust pan and brush and crockery and cutlery.
